Nicole Garton’s Top 5 Tips for a Strong Artist Application

Applying to The Other Art Fair is about more than simply uploading images of your work. Your application is often the first introduction the Selection Committee h has to you, your artistic practice, and the work you’re creating. A thoughtful, well-prepared application can help your work stand out and ensure the committee understands your vision.

Global Fair Director Nicole Garton gathered her top tips for artists preparing their applications. Whether you’re applying for the first time or returning with a new body of work, these recommendations can help you put your best foot forward.

1. Present Your Artwork Professionally

The quality of your artwork photographs can have a significant impact on how your work is perceived. Ensure your images are well lit, evenly exposed, and tightly cropped so that only the artwork is visible. Avoid distracting backgrounds, frames that are cut off, or unnecessary objects in the image. Think of your artwork images as your portfolio’s first impression. Clear, professional photography allows the Selection Committee to focus entirely on the work itself.

2. Double-Check Your Image Files Before Submitting

Before submitting your application, take a moment to confirm that all artwork files meet the required specifications. Oversized files, low-resolution images, or incorrect formats can create unnecessary issues during the review process. Reviewing these technical details ahead of time can help ensure your application is complete and presented as intended.

3. Introduce Yourself and Your Practice

Remember that the Selection Committee may be seeing your work for the very first time. Use your artist statement and application materials to provide context for your work. Share what inspires your practice, what themes you explore, and what makes this body of work meaningful. A strong introduction helps the committee better understand both the work and the artist behind it.

4. Price Your Work Thoughtfully

Pricing is an important part of your application. Nicole recommends basing your prices on your sales history, when possible, or on factors such as the dimensions, materials, and complexity of each piece. It’s also important to ensure your submitted works fall within our recommended price range of $100 to $10,000 (£100-£8,000).

5. Lead with New Work You’re Excited About

If you’ve recently developed a new body of work, don’t be afraid to showcase it. Applications are an opportunity to present the work that best represents your current practice and artistic direction. The Selection Committee is interested in seeing what you’re creating now. If there’s a series or collection you’re particularly excited about, highlight it and explain why it’s significant to your development as an artist.

Conclusion

A successful application isn’t necessarily about having the longest resume or the most exhibition experience. It’s about presenting your work clearly, professionally, and authentically.

By taking the time to prepare strong images, communicate your artistic vision, and thoughtfully curate your submission, you’ll give the Selection Committee the best possible understanding of your work and practice.
