BALCONES DISTILLING

The Other Art Fair is officially partnering with the award-winning Balcones Distilling to celebrate the artistry in whisky-making and the connection between craftsmanship and creativity.

At the heart of this collaboration is the “Spirit of Balcones: Artist in Residence Program”, a new initiative to empower artists to transcend traditional studios and create artwork that showcases their interpretation of bold free-thinking, reinvention, and embracing the magnetic sense of possibility that comes from expressing your full self.

In addition to the Artist in Residence program, attendees at the fair will have the chance to connect with members of the Balcones distillery team, savor craft Balcones cocktails, and try various Balcones expressions at their sample station.

BALCONES ARTIST IN RESIDENCE AT THE OTHER ART FAIR BROOKLYN

Keya Tama is a South African artist based in New York. His style can be described as ancient contemporary minimalism, utilizing recurring motifs of people, animals, and nature; his murals tell the stories of the past and future. Keya’s installation at Spirit of Balcones: Artist In Residence is geometric in composition and limited in palette. He combines sharp and rounded symbols of nature to create a dreamlike homage to the volatile Texas climate. Motifs like fire, cacti, mountains, and more, converge, creating a harmonious balance reminiscent of the moon and the sun in an eclipse, taking inspiration from Balcones latest innovation: Mirador Eclipse American Single Malt.

Keya’s creative style, blending ancient and contemporary influences, mirrors the Balcones philosophy toward whisky-making, honoring tradition while embracing innovation; Aspiring toward a future that respects the past while staying grounded in the present.

Join us on this exploratory journey to celebrate the artistry in whisky-making and the connection between craftsmanship and creativity.

New on the Scene

Art should never be elite.

Art should never be elite. The New Futures program is part of our continued mission to break down traditional barriers of the contemporary art world by giving prizes to talented, often underrepresented, emerging artists. Each recipient is given free exhibition space at The Other Art Fair along with access to networks and opportunities designed to jump-start their careers.

Mike King is a painter from Austin, TX living and working in Brooklyn, NY. The themes of his work are drawn from nostalgia and a critical examination of his overtly “American” experience. Utilizing second-hand textile scraps, his work turns waste into bold, collaged motifs. As a colorist, he’s inclined to express lugubrious undercurrents in his work– how can vibrant color carry an unsuspecting weight? His work is inspired by constructivism, 90’s cartoons, Sienese painting, color field painting, and assemblage. Mike has a BFA from Pratt Institute and will be an MFA candidate at Hunter College this fall.
