“I find real authenticity in images shot on film. Unlike digital photos, people cannot demand to see results right away and cannot delete the images just because their hair isn’t perfect. There is a great deal of anticipation when you’re waiting for your film to develop, and getting to relive and share moments at a later date is incredible. As a medium, it carries such sentimental value; it is how I began my career, and there is a sense of permanence in taking an image and it existing physically forever. A contact sheet is basically your entire shoot laid bare. It’s old-school, but it’s the foundation. You’ve got all the raw material in front of you. Each image is the same size as the negative, so you get this direct one-to-one print. It’s like seeing the image in its purest, most honest form. It’s raw and real. I love it because it’s like looking at a photo exactly as it was captured, flaws and all. There’s beauty in that imperfection.” – Rankin

For our upcoming October edition we have partnered with Central Saint Martins UAL to select 2 graduating students to showcase their work at the Fair. Sophie and Charlotte will both take a share in a stand at the Fair.
Charlotte Bassadone
Charlotte is a London-based artist. Her work explores climate change’s impact on ecosystems, focusing on plants. Through sculptural works, drawings, collage, printing, abstract map-making, and lidar scanning, Charlotte’s work investigates the landscape’s layered aspects, encouraging audiences to explore their collective experience and understanding of the natural world. Enduring themes include the experience and knowledge of landscape, geological processes, fragility, and erasure, and how art can speak to our critical climate crisis. Throughout her practice, Charlotte strives to curate narratives that engage and resonate with audiences and continually seeks to engage viewers in dialogue through carefully selecting and arranging artworks.
Sophie Ives
Sophie is a contemporary painter based in London. Her work explores the collision of memories. Sophie often patchworks together separate encounters in an attempt to transcend time and place. With a keen interest in the synesthetic nature of memory and our vivid recollection of arbitrary details such as the pattern of a rug from one’s childhood home or the speckled light through the roof of a tent. The significance of Sophie’s work derives heavily from the process of painting itself. The experiments and revelations that take place in the studio being vital to the works realisation. With an intimate relationship to the surface, her works showcases the somatic effect of paint. She pays close attention to the subtle nuance of painterly textures to provide the viewer with a visceral sensorial experience.
