‘100’ for 100 Fairs by John Paine

John Paine is a cartoonist, animator & illustrator from Sydney, Australia, whose work is distinctive and always fun.  He’s been making and drawing since he could hold a pencil, and is always working on something new and exciting, whether it’s packaging designs, viral videos, a range of cool movie posters, or something completely different!

To celebrate The Other Art Fair’s milestone of reaching 100 Fairs globally, we’ve commissioned the super-talented illustrator and cartoonist John Paine to create 100 art-related drawings, which will make up an interactive mural at The Fair.

You’ll be able to pick out famous artworks, cultural moments and artists, and help John bring them to life at the Fair by colouring them in – perhaps you’ll colour Frida’s hair blue, or make sure a duct taped banana gets an accurate yellow, the choice is up to you!  At the end of the Fair, there will be a full-colour design, and a sense of how mischievous you were in your colour choices…

New Futures

Born in Argentina, and now living in Melbourne, Pedro Guarracino’s work reflects his colourful upbringing in Buenos Aires. Pedro is enamoured with cubist takes on reality, absurdism as a philosophical approach to life, and the idea that behind everything there will always be play. His sculptural work combines elements of both crochet and ceramics and reflects on the connection between the traditional and the modern.

As our selected New Futures awardee, Pedro will present his new body of work “Narrow Identities”. This body of work is an exploration on the role that social media plays in our lives and how, through the lens of our digital persona, the full depth and diversity of our identities are filtered or entirely subsumed. “Narrow Identities” will challenge the audience at The Other Art Fair to consider what is lost in the process of self-censorship and aims to provoke reflection on reclaiming those hidden parts of ourselves.

Thanks to the wonders of Augmented Reality (AR) Pedro will be supported at the Fair by his trusty animated friend Kubo.

The Karmacy

A play on the ‘take what you need’ bulletin, the Karmacy invites you to pick the bottle containing what you most need, and allow the well-wishes of a karmacist to work it’s magic.  Replace the karmacist’s note with your own note of encouragement for the next soul in need of a pick-me-up, and place the bottle back on the shelf.

Garmonbozia!

Step inside and witness Zoe Milah De Jesus’ film Garmonbozia!.

An ode to the artist. The film mirrors the frustration that comes with accepting our limitations, recalls the freedom and euphoria that emerges through building connection to self, reminds us to be playful and unserious, and ultimately emphasises that there is a deep spirituality and mystery that fuels an artist’s work.

Melbourne Gothic

We have reframed art with Fantastic Framing and invite you to step into the frame, channel your inner farmer (or farmer’s daughter), and give this masterpiece a modern Melbourne twist.

Marching Women

The “Marching Women: Rise Up” project celebrates the strength and resilience of women through the creation of “Marching Woman” sculptures. These iconic forms are the result of workshops that not only teach sculpting techniques but also foster community, connection, and empowerment. Each sculpture, unique and personal, embodies the diverse experiences and shared strength of women.

Watch the development of one of these sculptures from a lump of clay. Each takes up to 3 hours to create over several days, allowing the clay to firm up for each stage. Feeling inspired and playful? Join in and have a go at making your own.

“Marching Women: Rise Up” is a testament to the transformative power of art and the unyielding spirit of women, standing as a symbol of courage, determination, and community.
