Photographic record of painting process

“The gesture is essentially always a gesture of not being able to figure something out in language.” (Giorgio Agamben, ‘Notes on Gesture’).

My recent work focuses on gesture.
I use my body in a ‘performative’, gestural way to inform or make the marks. The movement of the body is evident in the painting.
I modify or make a range of customised mark making tools which I attach to my body . This limiting of my ‘skill’ as a painter paradoxically allows for something else to arise on the canvas, which in turn generates a unique visual language.

My intention is to create paintings that evoke the essence of an experience.
Some paintings evolve out of a process of re-enactment and transcription of the original experience. Others, like the Field Recordings or those done with the collaboration of a musician respond to the here and now and record a series of fleeting moments.

Polly lives and works in London.

Polly Bagnall is a fine artist whose practice spans performance, painting, printmaking and dance.
During the 1980’s she was involved in socio-political art projects and was part of the Brixton Artist’s Collective.
Her training as an Art Therapist led her to develop creative arts projects in non-art settings. She set up community based services for mental health service users; and for young people, both of which flourish today.
Since 2000 her work focused on painting and she is a self-supporting artist undertaking private commissions and exhibiting work.
In 2010 she commenced an MA in Fine Art that led to gallery based art projects- developing larger scale abstracted paintings, installations and happenings.
