London-based Artist, Keira Rathbone has carved out a place in the UK art world using a typewriter to create unique works of art. Keira’s work has attracted attention from national and international newspapers and media; the knock on effect is that Keira’s website has attracted thousands of hits a day.

Inspired by the everyday – people & places, Keira uses the appropriate characters of her typewriter to gradually build up an image of the subject she will portray, thinking of her typewriter as a mark-making tool to record her experiences pictorially, rather than for writing.

Keira loves unconventional uses for machinery and objects and believes firmly in taking the time to look at things from more than one angle/perspective/distance in order to understand. The very small typewritten marks clustered on the page, collectively get perceived as a picture, and often are mistaken for pen/ink drawings but up close the complexities are revealed. Keira sees this as the metaphore for the way she experiences life.

She also looks to bygone eras for inspiration, but embraces the fact that we now have the technology to communicate with anyone anywhere. Keira hopes to travel the world collecting Typewriters with different alphabets and recording the journey in this unique way.

In public, Keira’s Typewriter Art takes on an element of performance – initially an unexpected aspect but since about 2004 she has developed into an ‘act’ performed at a variety of events such as exhibitions, festivals, parties and dinners.
