The May 2012 edition of The Other Art Fair will see the exclusive launch of the Memoirs of Lost Time series by Vikram Kushwah and Trisha Sakhlecha. To accompany the launch, Memoirs subject & BAFTA award winning Australian singer/songwriter Emily Barker will be giving a private concert following a reading from the upcoming book on Sunday, May 13th at 2:00 pm at Ambika P3.

Emily Barker’s track ‘Nostalgia’ was the theme tune for the BBC 1 TV series ‘Wallander’ winning a string of awards including the BAFTA & The Royal Television Society Award for the theme. Having left home at the age of 19 with a backpack she is now planning her 4th album exploring childhood innocence and the theme of ‘home’ and is in the process of bridging the gap between her roots in Australia and her home away from home in England.

Watch the marvelous ‘Nostalgia’ video here for a taste of things to come:

See Emily Barker as a character in Memoirs of Lost Time:

What is Memoirs of Lost Time?

A series of fine art prints and a coffee table book of short stories and pictures inspired by the romantic notions of childhood memories and the almost dreamlike nature they possess, Memoirs of Lost Time by Vikram Kushwah and Trisha Sakhlecha, takes you on an enthralling photographic and literary expedition.

Our ever-increasing voyeuristic tendencies mean we know a whole lot about the people behind the blogs we read, the films we watch, or the music we listen to. A biographical documentation of sorts, of seven creative personalities’ childhood recollections, these photo stories inspire those inquisitive inclinations, yet show the subjects in an unseen portrait of their fantasies and imagination; a very romantic vision of those formative years capturing not only what was, but also what could have been.

Each story takes you into the personal and never seen before world of one of these personalities with photographs featuring the subjects themselves, weaving in and out of reality, where you begin to drift into a realm of imaginative possibilities and yet remain attached to the facts that were. Wonder and curiosity can make seemingly impossible things happen; it’s time for wishful thinking to have it’s due.

Joffe & Pye have selected 10 outstanding international new artists to present their work in the front space of The Other Art Fair at Ambika P3 in Marylebone.

The result is their own art fair within The Other Art Fair. Visitors will be able to choose one of the artists to receive the prestigious worldwidereview.com FutureContemporary Prize and The Rebel Magazine Best Artist Award.

The Joffe and Pye Other Other Art Fair will be presented in a purpose built salon space with stencilled wall decoration and unique Joffe-Pye branding, as well as video profiles of the artists.

Over the last ten years Jasper Joffe and Harry Pye have curated many well received art exhibitions including Viva Pablo, The Bold & The Beautiful, and 100 Mothers. They have also worked together on such projects as The Rebel Magazine, The 99p Art Shop, and The Free Art Fair. The Guardian described Harry as “The master of lo-fi British art.” Vogue described Jasper as being “London’s premier artist/curator.”

Harry says: “There is always room at the top. We’re delighted to present this selection of artists and make them famous. I know some people may sneer at our decision to include 2 of Jasper’s relatives in our selection. The fact is we only picked artists who make work that we want to own ourselves.”

Jasper says: “We will be encouraging our artists to meet their public and will be handing out awards and prizes to whomever we think deserves them. The director of The Art Fair has shown us a lot of trust and given me and Harry a lot of freedom. Will we abuse that trust? Will Harry and I turn into everything we despise about corruption and nepotism that exists in the Art World? Only time will tell. We’ve put our reputations on the line.”

The ten artists that Jasper and Harry have selected for their art fair are:

August Kunnapu
Harry says: “I’ve been good friends with August for a very long time indeed. He’s unlike any artist I’ve ever met in London. He is less jaded than I am and he has optimism and a belief in painting that I have always found inspirational. He believes good paintings can make the artist and the world a better place.”

Gytautas Balkevicius
Jasper says: “Lithuania’s anarchic answer to Maurizio Cattelan. Self-described shock artist. I am proud to bring three of East Europe’s best artists to Marylebone.”

Nathaniel Potter
Jasper says: “Angry young painter from North London, aching evocations of a suburban adolescence smashed with a hammer.”

Chloe Mortimer
Harry says: “I wanted to include Chloe as I think she’s fresh and cheeky. Some might say she’s Brighton’s answer to John Stezaker. But I think her pop art collages have a unique charm of their own. I like her wit and spirit and the fact she is unpredictable..”

Daryll Joffe
Jasper says: “My mother paints people, usually her family of artists. She is influential on a succeeding generation of artists including Jasper, Chantal, and Oscar Joffe.”

Zia Fukyana
Harry says: “I read once that the comedian Max Miller used to tell his audiences “Take a good look as they’ll never be another” I wanted Zia involved as I believe she too is a one off. I have many interesting debates about sensitive issues that her work addresses. I think Zia’s work is a springboard for a good row.

Oscar Joffe
Jasper: “My precocious 15 year old nephew brings a unique visual insight into the teenage mind. Ironically the word nepotism derives from the Borgia Pope who made two of his nephews cardinals.”

Jack Wilson
Jasper says: “Meticulous still lives allude to his illustrious forebears who owned the Titanic. He is very young and very talented.”

Julian Wakeling
Harry says: “Julian uses photography to capture the magic happening everyday on the streets of Soho. His images of people’s faces reflected in windows and mirrors are often incredibly beautiful.”

Aleksandra Wojcik
Harry says: “My interpretation of Alek’s photography might not be what she intended but the reason I selected her is that I love the little discoveries her work makes about light and colour in places around the Thames. Her photos intrigue and delight me.”

FAD Office presents a fictional construct of a 1970’s magazine at this year’s The Other Art Fair. FAD looks to the past to re-imagine the role of the publisher in the future, using the office as a testing site to research and critique ideas that are not openly discussed today. To comment on the shifting values in art both politically and socially. FAD asks: do we need to look back in order to move forward? And what will the future hold for art?

In a hope to bridge the gap between the online and physical incarnations of FAD, FAD Office will present a curated programme of presentations with invited artists and curators; a series of in-depth interviews all of which will be documented and available online. The responsive staging of the office will take place over the four days for the public to watch - welcoming critical and collaborative discourse and exchange.

Curated by Kay Roberts and Chantelle Purcell.

Click here to follow the research behind FAD Office via their dedicated website.

The Fabelist collective presents a pop up market place curated exclusively for The Other Art Fair. Buy art directly from the makers – including some exclusive affordable small works – whilst you view, interact and learn from a series of performances, talks and master-classes.

The Edible Art Movement will be testing their philosophy of ‘We are what we eat’ with an art influenced gastronomical offering. Artist Zoe Catherine Kendall is offering an eclectic array of performance and tarot card reading, inspired by her paintings and Polly Bagnall will be recording readings of a different kind with her ‘Artemeter’ – Drop by to check this creative barometer for sensory storms!

Meanwhile there’s plenty to satisfy inquisitive minds with master classes from Fabelist artists Rachelle Allen-Sherwood and Carlos Martyn Burgos. Plus there’s some very special opportunities to converse with artists apart from the bustle of the buying and networking of the fair in our ‘Meet the Artist’ sessions.
